4 : Whether you wish to append gender codes and estimated ages as well as Origins codes

Using OriginsInfo outside Great Britain
OriginsInfo is an application which is country independent. That is to say the application can handle data from any country in the world.
Before attempting to process names captured in a country other than Great Britain it is important to understand a number of aspects of how the product has been put together.
1 : The classifications by which OriginsInfo classify names now extend to nearly two hundred different classifications worldwide. Although not all countries are covered in this classification, this is largely because, as in the case of Latin America, there are many instances where bordering countries share a common culture, language and religion and hence have broadly similar naming patterns. Where countries do not they do tend to have their own classifications. For example countries as small as Iceland, Fiji and Laos have their own classification codes.
2 : However there are a number of names which are common across two or more countries with separate classifications. For example the name ‘Antonio’ is equally common in Spain as it is in Italy. Therefore it is important when processing names captured in Italy that the name ‘Antonio’ is classified as Italian whilst when processing names captured in Spain that the name ‘Antonio’ is classified as Spanish. Only a few names are genuinely international in this way. Most are personal rather than family names. However some of them, such as ‘Antonio’, are very common.
3 : For this reason OriginsInfo provides the option for a name file to be processed using one of a number of ‘Views’. Currently seven views are supported, Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Spain. It is our intention to add other views in due course. According to the view that is used the ‘international’ names will be given different classification codes. For instance the use of the Italian view will cause ‘Antonio’ to be classed as Italian. So too will the Norwegian view. However the Spanish view will cause ‘Antonio’ to be classed as Spanish.
4 : In order to support these different views, the name tables in OriginsInfo are extended by processing and analysing reference files for these countries. The use of these reference files is useful not just for validating names that are peculiar to those countries but also for identifying names from other countries from which they have taken immigrants. Thus the incorporation of Australian reference files in OriginsInfo helps us to identify names from Laos and Cambodia.
5 : In addition to governing the codes that are assigned to particular names, the different views also provide statistics on the distribution of names by classification code for that country and in many cases for sub regions within it. Thus an Australian view enables an Australian user not just to improve the coding of particular names but also to compare the mix of classifications on an Australian file with the mix of classifications in Australia, in the State of Victoria or within the Melbourne conurbation.
For these reasons the OriginsInfo application is licenced on a per view basis. Users who wish to process name files originating outside Great Britain should purchase a licence which entitles them to view data from the country from which their files originate. This licence and the view that it permits is controlled by the OriginsInfo password.
Users who want to purchase a licence which allows multiple views can obtain a multi-view licence at a lower price than purchasing separate licences for each view.
